WAIHARAPA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Wairarapa Champion Tennis Tournament wit* continued yesterday in fine, weather. The. courts were ill line playing order, ami during the afternoon a largo, number of spin tutors witnessed the various games. In the lourth round of the Men's Championship Singles beat Thvnne after a prolonged match. The latter then retired to Pearse in the semi-final. Men's Championship Doubles, between Pearse and Spain and Hoydhouso a.n, t ] Maunsell, the former pair winning (G —I. I—o,1 —0, 10—8) after a game, lasting more than ninety minutes. Pearse was rather over anxious—a contagious complaint which was rapidly acquired by the other players. There were several prolonged rallies, and the spectators were treated to the bast display of tennis of the tournament, many of the recoveries being really excellent. A Gawith and Martin had an unexpectedly easy win from Cowan and Souncly and meet Spain and Pearse to-day. when a good match should result. .In the Ladies' Championship Singles the best match in the second round wa.s between Miss J. Moore and Miss L. M. Hughes, the latter winning 9—B, only to succumb in the next round to .Miss Wei I wood, after a stubborn fight at 9 —7. Miss 11. i Hughes put up a good fight against Miss Well wood, but- the experience cf the latter stood her in good -stead, and -she won the game and the championship by 9—5. Thynno had a victorious career in the Handicap Singles, defeating Gabites in the final at 70—62, after n j good game. The winner apparently played above his form, or else the -\v.ould not have been so liberal to him. In the MenV Handicap Doubles I). \ Gaselberg and Boddington (at 30), by excellent combined play, have readied the final. In. the upper half of the,--draw, there are still -several matches to play. The winner of the Ladies' Handicap Singles turned up in Miss L. M. Hughes (at 10), who well deserved her win. Playing a very steady game in all her matches, particularly with her sister, Miss R. Hughes, whom she beat .50-45. In the final she easily , vanquished Miss O. Booth, who received 15, 50—39. In the Ladies ' Handicap Doubles there are .still three matches to be played, and the same remark applies to the Combined Handicap Doubles,; visitors to the grounds today should have no Jack of interesting matches, and will be well repaid by visiting the courts.
