CASUAL DRUNKS
A NOVEL SYSTEM. .(Received Last Night, 9.35 o'clock.) SYDNEY, January 21. A scheme for dealing with casual drunks, which has been operating for many years in America, and lor five years in Victoria, has been introduced at the Central Police- Court, The Rev Hammond and a missioner will converse with likely men in the Courtyard, informing them that if they sign the pledge for not less than six months the Magistrate will be informed, and probably will not convict. r | he signatories ai-e visited at their homes during the same week, and a letter of encouragement sent to tJiem. The experience in Victoria shows that Uventy-fivo per cent of the casual drunks sign the pledge, of whom eighty keep it, or are not heard of again.
