His Excellency the Governor left Wellington for Auckland yesterday. The death is announced of Mr G-. T. Love, a well known figure in Wanganui labour circles.
A presentation is to be made to Mr A. Dillon, ex-M.P. for Hawke's Bay, at Waipawa on February sth. Mrs Robert Ransfield, an old resident of Manakau, died last week. The funeral, which was hold on Friday, was very largely attended.
A London cable, received last night, stated that the Right Hon. Joseph Chamberlain and Mrs Chamberlain had gone to Cannes.
The death is announced at Standerton, South Africa, of Mrs E. M. Haselden, wife of Mr F. H. Haselden. formerly M.P. for Patea. Mrs T. W. Sparks, of the Main liunk line, is at present spending a few days hohday with her relatives at Carterton:

The death of Mr .David Brqcklchui st, an old. and highly respected resident of Westla,:id, occurred on Monday. A Press Association message from Picton states : Mr George A. Smith, aged sixty-nine years, died suddenly on Saturday/nighty H© was playing bowls till late in the evening, when he had. tea.and went for a stroll. At ' ten o'clock a member of his family found him lying on a couch, dead. Heart trouble was the cause of death. The deceased: arrived in, Picton from Xewcastle-on-Tyne in 1862, and built up a very large business as a builder and contractor. He leave? a largo family, of eight sons and six daughters. There are few of the real old-time wool kings alive now. One of the last to cross the great divide was Mr John Chisliolm, who died at the residence of his nephew, Mr W. D. Main, of Dunedin, last week, aged eighty-four years, says the Alexandra Herald. Fifty years ago Mr f.'l'i-holm was associated with the late
Mr Robert J. Gairdirier in the proprietorship of Taieri Lake Station, on •which run the Hyde diggers were situated. At that time the Taieri Lake run comprised nil the land'from' Rock and Pillar Railway" Station on the south, -to Kokonga on the north, with the Taieri river for the eastern boundary and the crown of the Rock and Pillar for the western. It was a magnificent piece of grazing country. and under Mr Chisholm's manfip'.omn it produced good results. About forty-five, years ago Mr Gail-d----iner. who i?* still alive in Dunedin, retired, and Mr Main, nitli Mr Chisliolm for manager carried en the run for many years. Mr Main was a solicitor, and a well known fun ire in public life, being 1 , if we mistake mot, first M.H.R. fir Mount Ida. Mr Chisliolm was Mr Main's brother-in-A'lw, and was a fine type ef the oldtime sqintte-'.
