TRADING RIGHTS. (Received Januarv 15. \OM) a.m.) LONDON, January 14. Messrs Lever Bros., the well-known soap manufacturers, whose enterprises are already vast, have concluded a,i agreement with" Liberia emp:;aering a lease to the firm of twelve thousand square miles of country, amounting to over a quarter of. the area oi Liberia, with monopolies over <"' palms. The leases provide for the ii>.e v\' the land and in any form, and gives the firm the exclusive rigli; to trade with the natives.
[Liberia is a negro republic- on tb' const of West Africa. The- development of t'lie country lias been greatly hindered, by laws prohibiting any but Lberiaii -subjects from boldirig land. Until 1909 foreigners were prohibited front trading in the interior or anywhere except at (be official ports of entry.]
