Mr R Larsen. who has been master of the school at Mako Mako for the past three years, and who is leaving to take up an appointment under the Taranaki Hoard, was given a send-on: by the settlers of the district on Wednesdiay evening. The death occurred in the Aucklamd Hospital on Wednesday of Mr James Wattle. Deceased, who was fifty-five years of ■ age, was one or the oldest horsemen in New Zealand. He had wins' to his credit in nearly all the big classical events, and rode the winner in the first' Auckland Cup ever run.
The marriage of Mr Francis William Pointon. of Masterton, fourth son of Mr and Mrs J'. Pointon, of Petono, to Miss Ellen Millar, > oungest daughter of Mr and Mrs A, .Millar, of Willisham, Suffolk ,England, took place at St. Aidan's Church, Miramar. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. Blackburne, assisted by the Rev J. fir. Castle.
Mr E. Byrne, whose death was reported at Hawera on Tuesday, was a colonist of about sixty years' standing, over forty of which were spent in Hawera. He came first to Hawera .from Wanganui with General Cameron's force in 1866, when, he was in charge of a team of bullocks for carting supplies for the -forces. Though under fire at Nukumaru, he was never in the fighting line. For many years he lived with his parents on the South Road. His father waß a private in one of the English regiments.
