MR ALFRED DEAKIN.
The retirement from politics of Mr Alfred Deajsin, Leader of the Opposition in tho Commonwealth Parliament, i will bo somewhat of a disaster to our sister States. There are few men in the Antipodes more intimately associated'with tlie aspirations of colonial people than he. There are fewer still who posses literary attainments that qualify them to render service to the State in snch a manner »s it has been rendered during the last thirty years by Mr Alfred Deakin. A native of Victoria, he w-a.s proud of his country, and it was this pride that quickened enthusiasm in him, and caused him to give of his best to tho nation. An ardent Imperialist, a man of more than ordinary journalistic ability, a brilliant barrister, and a shrewd statesman, his retirement From politics, particularly at the present juncture, will be little short of a national calamity.
