MR A. DEAKIN
I EULOGISED BY THE PRESS. (Received This Morning, 12.20 o'clock ) LONDON, January 9. The newspapers give prominence to Mr Alfred Deakin's resignation. The Chronicle says the Empire, loses a forceful character, and one whose prestige is only second to Sir Wi£ i'rid Laurier's. The Daily News says: "He terminates his political life as 'lie began itplain Alfred Deakin, one of the very few Colonial statesmen holding that titular honours from the Motherland are not a fitting reward for public service i» the newer States of the Empire." The Morning Post says that "Mr Deakin is one of our race leaders " The Times deeply regrets Vlr W.ikin's retirement, and states that Englishmen regard thim as- one of the leaders of the whole Imperial movement. a«d whose vision ranged beyond his own Dominion.
