PRESSURE ON TURKEY.

ATTITUDE OF THE POWERS.

LONDON, January 8

It is reported that the Ambassadors at the Peace Conference favour pressure being brought to bear upon Turkey, in order to force her to realise the realities of defeat. In the House of Commons, Sir E6V ward Grey stated; that the action of the Powers, in the event of a failure of the Conference, was receiving attention. He was unable to make a statement regarding the decision, until all had consented. The announcement is made that the Roumanian Minister has resumed conversations with M. Daneff regarding territorial compensations.

POSITION AT ADRIANOPLE.

REDUCTION OF RATIONS

CAPITULATION DISCUSSED.

The rations at Adrianople havebeen reduced to one-fourth. Eighty thousand are sick, doctorless, and fireless.

Turkish and Bulgarian delegates on Monday discussed the question of capitulation. The Turk* demand that they keep their arms and guns, hut this request the Bulgarians refused.

It is suspected that the probable early fall of Adrianople influenced the suspension of the Peace Conference. The Ambassadors' Conference has been resumed.

Reuter's Agency believes that unanimous united action will he taken, and. that it is expected thai the Ambassadors' Conference will advise Turkey to cede Adrianople.

'The' Pope is sending a Note to the ambassadors, requesting that Palestine be removed from Turkish control or placed under a guarantee of the Powers.

Paris newspapers express pleasure at. the suspension of peace negotiations. They are of opinion that the present rupture will enable Europe to intervene.

The Daily Chronicle says that the su?r»ension of negotiations will ingeniously relieve the Balkans of the resnonsihilitv of the next step, which must be tnken} by Turkey /or the Powers.

The Daily News says that Italy is anxious to vtain the islands she is occupying. If so, an international scramble will begin. Austria, is opposed to tb» Allies annexing any of the Aegean Islands. Arrangement* for a small Turkish loan, not intended for war purposes, have been concluded in London; This is taken to indicate that the prospects for peace are more hopeful.
