HON. A. DEAKIN
RESIGNS LEADERSHIP OF LIB-
ERAL PARTY

MELBOURNE, January 8. Mr Alfred Deakin lias resigned the leadership of the Liberal Party in the Commonwealth Parliament. He informed press interviewers that his retirement was solely due to ill-health. He intends retiring completely from politics. after the forthcoming campaign, in which he will participate, particularly in connection with the Referendum proposals. During the past couple of years, he says, he has felt the strain of the leadership of the party very severely. The Right'Hon Andrew Fisher, Prime Minister, has expressed profound regret at the causes which have led lip to Mr Doakin's retirerr 'it, and appreciation of the groat services he has rendered Australia.
. :{Mr Deakin was born in Melbourne in 1856, and entered the Victorian Parliament in 1879. He is a barris-ter-at-law. and a. brilliant journalist. He was the first Attorney-General of the Commonwealth Parliament, and was Prime Minister of the Commonwealth from 1903 to 1909.)
