CALIFORNIAN THISTLE.
The humpy and stumpy little town cf Taihape, whjch is situated somewhere in the neighbourhood of Mount Ruapehu, has a grievance. It culti?^nongst other things, a healthy/"variety of the Qalifornian thistle. Somebody wrote the Prime Minister and asked why tho Inspectors of Noxi--1 ous "Weeds did not exercise the au- | thority vested in them and compel the unhappy settlers to slay tho thisi tie. The Premier replied that he | could not give an assurance, that the ' Act would bo enforced, but stated That, "if any settler wishes to know whether it will bo necessary to clear the thisth' during the current sea«m, I he should c"mmunicate with the Inspector " Taihape is displeased with this reply. Evidently it has been used* to asking past Premiers whether i this or that Act is to be enforced, and when it is told by Mr Massey that the. administration of the law i* in the hands of responsible officials, it cannot understand tho change. Poor, benighted Taihape!
