AUSTRALIAN COINAGE.
A correspondent has raised an interesting point in a letter to tho Otago Daily Times, inquiring ,whether the Australian silver coinage is legal tender in this country. He seems to have b"en puzzled by tho readiness of tradespeople to accept gold coins minted in the Commonwealth, while they somet-iijiey refuse tho new silver coinage. It has been evident of late that .silver coins from Australia have been coming into the Dominion in fairly large numbers, but the Comrri" to" Ith silver coinage is not legal tender in New Zealand and there is no obligation upon any person to accept it. The "Otago Daily Times'' remarks with obvious reason that tho position is unsatisfactory. While the majority of the banking instituttions in New Zealand will accept Australian coinage from their customers, there i? at least one of them that • e- ! fus(\s to handle it and even those which do accept it would probably reject it '■. if there wa-s any risk of its accumulating on their hands to more than n limit-fed extent. In thepo circumstances it- is apparent that tho acceptance [ of it by tradespeople -and by members of the community in general may bo I attended by somo little inconvenience.
