A Sydney cable announces tho death of tho Hon. John Hughes, M.L.C. Lady and Miss Hector are at present on: a visit to Masterton. Judge Wilson, of the Native Land Court, is reported to be lying dangerously ill from appendicitis at Rawene.
Miss Winnie Jones has been appointed local acting secretary of the Trinity College, London, in place of Mr H. S. Claughton, who has sent in his resignation. Tho .marriage of Miss L. C, Milne to Mr J. Kennedy of Gladstone, was celebrated at Wellington on Mondav, December 16th, by the Rev. E. O. Blamires. Mrs M. Bakor-Gabb, .8.A., assistapt in the secondary department of the Pahiatua District High School, who is well known in Masterton, intends to retire, early next year, from the services of the Education Board. She contemplates a trip to Great Britain, leaving in April. Miss Winnie Jones entertained "her junior pupils at her rooms, Eton's Buildings, Masterton, on Saturday last. A pleasant, afternoon was spent with competitions and.jnusic. Items were given by all the pupils. Competitions were won by Miss Viyian Gregory and Master Clifford Mills. The candidates who recently sat for tho law examinations in Masterton have all received- advice that they succeeded in passing. Mr C. A. Hendry is entitled to the Third Section of the L.L.B. Degree, Mr H. Bis.s the 2nd section L.L.8., and Messrs R. McKenzie and T. O'Dowcn the first section of the solicitors' professional examination. The following visitors are staying at tho Club Hotel, Masterton:—Lady and Miss Hector, Mr and Mrs R. .I.' Barton (WTiakataki), Mrs Nevms Messrs Milliken and •Stark (Palmerston North), Messrs Payne, M.P.. Snowden, Woodlock, Badden,. Garner. Mason, Fouhy, Wilkinson. Lowe. Clifton, Tremavme. Luff, Orr. and Reicfi. S.M. (Wellington), Collins and McAlpine (Martinhorouch), and South Melbourne cricket team.
