VETERINARY SURGEONS.
There are at present fifty-four members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in Now Zealand, as well a.-i' others holding veterinary qualifications, and -some legislative measure which will clearly define the status of veterinaryp petitioners is becoming moro and more a necessity. The increasing value of live-stock creates a demand for skilled, veterinary services ; and, quite apart from the point that members of an honourable profession should in justice receive- adequate recognition and protection fi'om the State, it Is necessary not only that stockowners should be protected from being exploited arrant qtiacks, but also that their interests should be considered, and skilled assistance be made available for them by encouragement being given to good men to settle in the country for tho purpose of practising their profession. At present tho lack of any Stato recognition of the status of properly qualified men acts as a great deterrent of this, and the Chief Veterinarian lias commended this matter to the earnest consideration of tho GoYM'nWMlfc,
