AMATEUR ATHLETICS

THURSDAY'S EVENTS.

Tito Wairarapa Amateur Athletic Club held a series of races yesterday evening on the Park Oval. There was the usual largo attendance of spectators, close on 300 people being present, testifying to the popularity of the sport. The officials had some difficulty in getting the spectators to leave the Oval during the running. This is regrettable, as the Club provides splendid sport for all and 'Sundry, and s'hmild bo entitled to some consideration. It is to be hoped that in future those who attend these popular evening event's will meet the desires of the athletic officials, who go to a deal of trouble to arrange the various events in the evening programme. There were several good finishes, bearing evidence of the good work done by the handicapper. The results were as follow: 100 YARDS HANDICAP.

J. Vesty 1 R. Messenger 2 W. Land 3 Won by inches. Time, 10 l-ssec. 440 YARDS HANDICAP. L. Crasa (40yds) -. 1 G. B. Brunton (33yds) ... 2 S. Hoar (30yds) 3 Won by four yards. Time, 53 1-5 sec. ONE MILE HANDICAP. S. Temole (175 yds) ..r... 1 West (175 yds) 2 J. Bradbury (scr) 3 Temple won rather easily, a good finish for second place. Time, 4min 'lOsec.

SWIMMING. The Wairarapa Amateur Swimming Club held a sixty-six yards handicap event in tbe Park Lake, there being eiwht competitors. The result was as follows: D. Welch (Usee) 1, G. Foreman (lsec) 2, F. Phillips (3sec) 3. An excellent race. Welch winning by inches. Time, 66sec. A tub race was also held, and resulted as follows: W. Scott 1, O. H. Hairs 2.
