GOVERNMENT GRANTS.
A number of local bodies in New Zealand will be saying "thank you for nothing" to the Government for the road grants that appeared on the public works estimates this year. Most of these grants have been made on a pound for pound basis, that is to say; the Government will find £1 for ©very £1 provided by the local authority up to a. given sum. It so happens, however. that a great many of tho county wrancils have reached tho £SOOO borrowing limit, arid they will bo unable Jo l«an<j required to enable
them to t-ako up ilio grants. 1 lio Government may, or may not, have been aware of the position when the grants wore placed uon the estimates. They will certainly know it before the financial year has expired.
