SHOOTING FATALITY

YOUNG MAX'S TRAGIC DEATH

(By Teiegraph—i'reu Atsodation.)

OHRISTGHURCH, Last Night. Yesterday three youths, Moses Pawelka, aged 19, his brother Michael, two years younger, and William Fix, aged about 17, went pig shooting in the hills at the back of White Rock station. About 3.45 p.m. the younger brother rode into one of the farm dwellings higher up the valley, and told them that Moses had been shot in tho groin, on one of the spurs of the Tapley Range. The settler at once sent a motor car down to North. Loburn to telephone to R&ngiora for a doctor, and rode up himself, -with four mounted whepherds to where the man lay. The journey was about ten mile's through very rough and broken country, and the unfortunate youth had died about a quarter 'of an hour before the helpers reached him. Dr Burnett had been reached by telephone and was- as far as life motor car could take him before 6 o'clock. Three horses were waiting for him. Father Hyland. of Rangiora, was only n little while behind him.. [ Particulars of the accident are moagiv, but it seems that the deceased fired at a pig. wounding it, and stepped aside for Fix to take a shot.' As ho was about to fire Fix .slipped, and the chargo lodged in the deceased's back, rather alxrve the right hip. On seeing the deceased, and the country where he was, the doctor said that had Pawelka l>een alive, it would not have been possible to move him. and they could only have put b;im under I ca.nva s there.
