f , The death is announced of Sir .George Howard Darwin, K.C.8., 'M.A., F.R.S. Mr F. V. Waters has been appointed assistant-secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department. Lord and Lady Islington sailed on Saturday from Sydney by the steams Osterley. The Rev. Father Cognet, of Otaki, is at present lying seriously ill at the Catholic '■' Presbytery in Boulcott Street, Wellington. ' " Mr John Drummonci. formerly wellknown in this district as a stock inspector, is at present on a visit to Masterton.. A Sydney cable states that Alderman Cooks has been elected Lord Mayor of Sydno- securing fifteen votes te the retiring Lord Mayor h nine. Messrs J. D. Ritchie (Chairman of the Land Purchase Board) and T. N. Broderick (Commissioner of ■ Crown. Lands! arrived in Masterton by the train yesterday. Mr W. C. Buchanan, M..P... is leaving on Friday next on a visit xo the Old Country.' He hopes to be back in New Zealand in time lot the opening of Parliament. It is over twenty years since Mr Buchanan previously visited the Homeland. He i,s to be tendered a farewell social at Greytown on Wednesday evening.
