SERIOUS ACCIDENT

AT A CYCLE ROAD RACE.

(By Telegraph—Press- Association.) TIMARU, Last Night. A remarkable and serious accident marred the local road race' of tho Temuka Caledonian Society this afternoon. The eager crowd near the winning post formed a narrow lane for the riders. Mr George Ward, president of the Society, was m the front of the line. He. dropped bis pencil, and stooped to pick it up, and before Ma recovered himself a rider came along, probably at tlie rate of twenty-five miles an hour, and tho pedal struck Mr Ward on the side of the head. He fell unconscious, bleeding, from the month, nose-and ears. He was conveyed to the hospital, where he is in a critical condition. The cyclist was thrown but was, not hurt.
