ST. ANDREW.
The banks in.M«istert'on and elsewhere are closed to-day out of respect to the memory -of St. Andrew. Some people may not know who St. Andrew was. He is known to Scotchmen as their patron Saint/ Why? Because the bones of St. Andrew, the first disciple of Christ, who is supposed to have suffered martyrdom on the cross at Patrae in the year 02, I or 70, A.D., arc said to have been taken over to St. Andrew's Bay l.y St. Regnhis in the fourth century. This monkish legend has, however, long since been discredited, and it is jivst doubtful whether the disciple's" bones ever saw Scotland, Neverfchc-" less, Si. Andrew is Scotland's patron saint, and that is the end of it. The banks must c!ose ? and the Civil Servants ?>e given ft respite from thair arduous duties. The pity is that wo cannot find a few moro saints, to whom we might do honour —tho people of this country, particularly the Civil Servants and bank officials, are so horribly overworked! i
