THE AURORA
WfRELESS MESSAGE RECEIVED
IMPORTANT DISCOVERY
(Received November 28 11 a.m.)
HOBART, November- 28
A wireless message states that Dr Mawson's ship, the Aurora, has left the Macquaries, and is due here on 15th December. She will afterwards return to the Macquaries to bring back the expedition. An important discovery was made during the voyage down, tending to confirm the theory that there was a former land connection between Tasmania and Antarctica. -When the vessel was 200 miles.south, soundings showed a rocky ridge at a depth of 700 fathoms, extending almost due north and south. Present charts show 1500 to 2000 fathoms in this area.
Possibly Captain Diedrichen, the Norwegian whaler at present in New Zealand, will superintend the Aurora's whaling operations.
