THE FLOWER SHOW.
The present season has, up to the present, been far from favourable for • the culture of plants and flowers, but tho display at the Masterton Drill Mall yesterday would lead one to believe that the season has wot, after all, been so very bad. It is, however, not the season that has been responsible for the very beautiful collection of exhibits that were shown, us those who had the work of attending to them. In this lies, no doubt, lialf the battle in connection with the cultivation of plants and flowers. iS'o matter how favourable the season may be, if the plants are not scientifically and carefully tended, the results will be poor. In many of the classes exhibited at the Masterton Horticultural Society's show, the plants were a great improvement on displays of former years, when the' seasons, too, were favourable, which points to the fact that lovers of flowers in this district have studied the culture of plant and flower life. Flowers hoave always held a high place in Man's esteem, and in recent years (here has been a desire on the pari of horticulturists to improve and perfect the growth of plants, with the result, that to-day great improvement is shown in the many branches of floriculture. Judging from yesterday's display in tho Drill Hall, this district has not been falling behind, but lifts, on the contrairy, been making rapid advancement, atu.l Masterton exhibitors should be able to compete .successfully in the premier shows of the Dominion.
