The' Premier-said: "Our existence as a nation and au Empire,, .depends on the- defence. The'.overseas Pciiiinions/ should spend more' on naval defence than in the past. The yearly contribution of New Zealand towards the navy is £250,000, including the interest on the cost of a battleship,'but "if the battleship were paid far to-morrow, the contribution would not be decreased."
