BRITISH DEFENCE.
A cable published in this morning's issue gives two sides to the question of British defence. On tho one Ji.ind the Navy League is demanding; tho laying down of four armoured cruisers :ii addition to those provided for in this year's estimates, so as to gtia-r----ar t«e Britain's supremacy on tho sea. On the other the Secretary of the War Office declares that the defence forces of the' Empire are in perfect readiness. The latter assurance will afford satisfaction at tibe present stage of national unrest; but the demand of the Navy League cannot bo ignored, for it ig probably 'based upon f> knowledge of what is happening in other countries. "We cannot -shut our eyes to the fact that Germany is making a bold bid for the supremacy of tho sea, and while this is &o we must build, and build, and build, until Germany is convinced that her case is hopeless. j
