"EFFECT OF PROHIBITION. "
"One effect of prohibition in Masterton during the last few years is reflected in the increase in criminal'siatistics in the Carterton district." This is the expression of opinion of a person of "authority" in Carterton. Wo 'confess that wo do not quite understand the significance of the remark. -Are, we to understand that the peopte of Carterton are drowning the sorrow they feel at (Masterton's profound stupidity at going; dry ? Did the man
who stole a photograph in Carterton do so to demonstrate the evils of Nolicensu in, Masterton? Was the gelignite freak at Waihakeke the result of the hotels at this end of the district being closed? Are we to infer that Masterton was over-run with the criminal class prior to No-license, and that these dregs of society have now removed to Carterton ? Or, what are we to believe ? It may interest the man in "authority" at Carterton to know that Masteron is not a "prohibition" town, and that the "effects of prohibition" cannot well be reflecteict on Carterton. But that is another story, as Kipling would say.
