MAORI TANGIS.
TlnS ■ VVanganui Herald protests against the demoralising and impoveri.shin.jg influence of the Maori "tap--gi," and quotes the Hon I)r Pomare to show that these gatherings are a curse, and are responsible in a great measure for the infant mortali l among the Natives. In view of the big "tangi" at present in progress in the north over the "remains of an indifferent monarch, it would be well if ftr Pomare were to put his precept into practice, and give the Natives a sound talking-to on the subject of these useless and impoverishing assemblages. If we wish to preserve the remnant of the splendid Native race, wg must adopt stringent measures, to prevent the dissemination of disease. There is no more destructive agency than the "hui," or tho "tangi."
