MASTERTOX ROSE AND SWEET

PEA SHOW

The Rose and Sweet Pea Show takes place in the Drill Hall, Mastcrton, on Wednesday, 27th November, and a« an exhibition of what can be grown in tho Wairarapa it should prove a great attraction. The roses just now aro at their best, and a walk through the streets of Mastertoon and its suburbs is a treat at this time of the .year. If half tho people who grow roses would only enter blooms for competition, we should have a show worthy of the district. At any rate, the fact that- so many of our cottage gardens are ablaze' with this favourite bloom, is proof that the Horticultural Society has proved decidedly beneficial to the district. These periodical competitions are. the means of encouraging the growth of the choicest blooms, and the climate of Wairarapa is particularly favourable to the cultivation of the rose. In addition to the ordinary and special prizes that are offered, there is tho Dixon Rose Bowl to compete for. This is for the best rose in the room, and must be won twice at spring shows before becoming the property of any exhibitor. Tho .sweet peas are a little backward this season, owing to the prevalence of cold rains, and for this reason the committee of the Society decided upon holding the show a week later than the date first arranged for. This should give growers a much better chance of making a grand display, and probably next week fine sunshiny weather may have set in. Certainly tho prospects for a successful show look better for next week than if it had been hold this week, as originally intended. The greatest interest in this show is centred in the Silver Challenge Cup. for the best exhibit of 12 named varieties of sweet peas, six blooms of each. This should bring out a great number of competitors, and make a fine display. Cut blooms and decorative work should make a very attractive show, and give the vusiting public and members something for their monev.
