MASTERTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. A meeting of the Council of the' Masterton Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, there being present Messrs C. E.' Darnell .(pre.sident), A. Henderson, J. Caselberg, J. C. Cooper, J. B. Keith, Hodgkinson, G. W. Pervy,' W. B. Chennells, J. Brown, G. C SummereJl, 1). M. Graham and E. H. Waddington. Ay, llegies for absence wore received from Messrs R, Brown, I). K. Logan and P. T. Spain. The treasurer reported a crodit balance! at date of £23 8s Sd. i A letter was received, from Mr W. C. Buchanan. M.P., covering a com- ! mnnication from the Minister of Justice, stating that sufficient reason had not been shown for compelling the permanent rcsidnicr- of t!io Stipendiary Magistr.ite in the district. It had not been shown that any inc venienee had her;) suffer;-;]. Moreover, the Magistrate had a wide circuit, and he -canld not reside in any particular township. Mr' Buchanan stated that he was writing to the Minister again on the subject.-—Sev-eral members protested .against tho decision of the Minister.—Mr Henderson pointed out that the absence of a Coroner in Masterton c.uised great inconvenience and expense to the county. He had been in formed that the legal fraternity had not signed a memorandum in the matter.—After some discussion, it was decided, on the motion of Mr .T. B. Keith, that a committee consisting of the president. Mr Henderson and the mover fr.ime a resolution to the Minister on the .subject. A communication was received from the Hastings Chamber, asking for cooperation in urging upon the Minister of Railways the necessity for the construction of light line railways.— The secretary stated that he had already written tho Minister on the subject, and a venly had been received, stating that the matter would receive consideration.
Mr G. B. SykeS, M.V. S wrote, stating that he would do flSis oest to impress upon Ministers the necessity for instituting light-line railways. A letter was read from the Wellington Chamber, covering resolutions curried at a conference of importers and others in Wellington, recommending that hags of manure be of MOlbs weight, with two lugs, and that no hooks be used.—The secretary stated tint, at the request < f the Wellington Chamber, he had r-nmnunicat-ed the resolution to leciil merchants who were interested. Tt was decided to pay the hotel and other expenses incurred hv Mr J. W. McEwaii, of Petone. on the occasion of his recent visit to Ma-sterton. QUARTERLY MEETTXG. The quarterly meeting of the Chamber was subsequently held, when the snme .members were present as at the council meeting. Mr A. Henderson suggested that the question of woollen mills bo held over until the new year, when more money would be .available. The matter would then be taken up enthusiastically. A committee consisting of Messrs A. Henderson. ,T. Caselberg and G. C Sum morel I was set un to inquire into the question of procuring n more suitable meeting-room, and to report.
