PROPOSED WOOLLEN MILLS.
J DETAILS OF COST. I LETTER FROM MR McEWAN. The following letter from Mr J. W. McEwan, of Petxine, was read at the meeting of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce yesterday:— "On going .through .my notes I find that I calculated for a 75 -Ji.p. engine and'boiler as being sufficient for the work to be done jn a two-set mill, but would recommend a. 150 n.p. to provide for possible extensions' of plant. "The icoort in the Age does not r rn.ike the cost of the spinning muios quite clear. There are 150 spindles provido.l for each mule. For two pair mules 600 would be the number provided.
"As I provided for a weekly output of 9000 yards of flannel only, it would \ be advisable for an all-round trade to increase the number of spindles. "However, as I allowed £IOOO for preliminary expenses, and there was still a. margin of £l6oo—to work, between the total of the detailed estiimato and the sum of £20,000—1 fthink you will agree that I wa s anxious to keep on the safe side of every tiling. "If the matter is to be taken up in i earnest, I would recommend the formation of a companv with a eapitd of £30,000. This would provide a reasonable working capital for the purchase of wool in season and paying wages, etc., until returns come in. besides obviating the necessity of leaning on the Bank. "I expect that some people will attempt to throw a" wet blanket 1 over the project—this invariably happens, and is not always the result of purely disinterested motives. "I wish to specially emphasise this: That I jm not looking; for personal: gain in what T havedone/ and I cannot now promise to do more than I have already promised, namely, to advise you if necessary in the matter of sole"otinj.r machinery, employees, etc. For this, out-of-pocket expenses would be -ill that I would ©.Wet."
