January 1. -Great Northern Derby. The. Rangitikei Racing Club will hold its Summer meeting on December Ith and I'2l-h. An attractive pro. gramme lms been drawn up by the popular Club, [W which nominations Call <!ue to-night. with the secretary, Air 11. A. Good ill. After the' big carnical ':;t Riccnrton owners and trainers will be glad of this week' 1 * respite, which enables them to give their charges a short spell. In a week or two the summer racing season will bo <it its height, with a bu.-y time in store for r.icing generally. Several Wairarapa horses have been entered at the Blenheim fixture, which opens on Wednesday next. Itwill not require many defections to leave very .-mall fields, but as the races do not seem difficult to win, owners m -y be tempted to make the trip. Sinapi-i has been allotted 9st Oil) in the Blenheim Handicap, a Iravy burden for such a small mare. Ihe ndds against her is, however, not very high, so that it will not be sun>rising to see her paid up for. i The erratic Longsteo, in the simo stable, would only have to be. in a | galloping humour to keep the field opposed to hci' in the Flying Handicap. very busy. Rut the chances are very 'much against her leaving the barrier. Ladino 'has been doing well on the lord tracks lately, and will make the trip. The Sir Lnddo gelding should ■do his owner a good turn soon. Sir Knox is striding out very freely in his work at Opaki. In being asked to carry Sst 91b at Feilding the big chestnut has been a.sked a stiff question. Sir Solo, who 'has two engagements; at Feilding, is going en the right, way. ■ Last season the Sir Laddo horse ran Ids best races after plenty of work so it is possible that he will not lr seen at his best before Christmas. In writing a little time ago T inadvertently mentioned! that Mr F Dorset's mare Yite 'liad thrown a oneeyed foal to Chatswoitli. It should have read the brood mare .Black Patch which has thrown a one-eyed foal to the some sire. Yite's foal is quite all right. After the numerous complaints regarding the totalisator arrangements at the Wawrley meeting, the stewards 'have decided to make a number of improvements, including the installation of a "silent'' machine. The V.R.C. has received 200 applications for the three positions of stipendiary stewards. Many people interested in raping in the .Dominion wonder when similar appointments will be. n ade. lii?re is a consensus of opinion that- they are required. Manawakaha is reported to he going "great guns" on the Fgmont track. This gelding will make his reappearance at Feilding, and although a gallop in public would "sharpen" him up, lie promises to be. hard to beat. 'Although it is hard to judge how' the acceptances will pan out. the Feilding Spring meetng gives every indication of being a record one for the Club. The Bonnie Scotland—La Marquise mare in Phillip's stable lias improved wonderfully of late. - She is a fine upstanding bay. and promises to race well later on. Killaloo and Ball.v
Shannon, in the same stable, are standing up to their work well, and promise to bo in good heart by the time tho Christmas meetings roll round. New Zealand is at last to have a stipendiary steward, and it has been found necessary to go to Australia to fill the position. Mr J. McMahon, of Sydney, has been appointed to tho post by the New Zealand Earing Conference, and will probably take vup iiis duties by the new year. 'The position is a most difficult one to fill, and no doubt in choosing Mr MeMahon the members of the linking Conference worn well advisod. It is expected that 0110 or more deputy str wards wiK be appointed later, as it is hardly conceivable that one oiTicud can do all that is required. The Fe'lding Jockey Club's Spring . meeting takos place on November 30th and December 2nd. Owners and trainers arc reminded that acceptances for the first diy's handicaps also for Aorangi Trial Phte and Maiden Flack Scurry, close on Saturdav, November 16th at p.m.. with the secretary, Mr E. Goodbehere.
