HOMING CLUB.

TAUMARANUI RACE,

The No. 2 hamper birds wore rung far the above race point on the evening of the 12th inst, and left by the first train on the 13th. Owing to being overcarried, they were liberated at Ongarue at 10 a.ru-. by the stationmaster, this being an airline distance of 155 miles. Although the weather seemed against the birds at this end, they put up a good velocity, vice 1400 per minute. Result: A, Miller's "Too Fast," 1405 yds per min, Ist; E. Wicken's "Silon,'.' 1403 yrs per min, 2nd; F. Knee's "Storm Bird," 1401.5 yds per min, 3rd; W. Gourlay's "Hope," 1401.3 yds per min, 4th; W. Dowling's "Splash," 1398 yd§, per min, sth; ,J. Dixon's "Effort," 1397 yds per min, 6th. For the above race the fine weather experienced was about the first time -this season that the birds have had such favourable conditions for flying. In fact, tho recent unseasonable weather has exacted a heavy toll in several lofts, and p, number of perches are empty in consequence. On Saturday, lGth inst, the Masterton Club are flying from Dunedin in conjunction with birds from Auckland and Wellington, some 25 birds feeing sent from this Club. The idea is to try and carry the Auckland birds along for tho first day, as it is considered that by a large number of birds flying at once tho Auckland birds mil have ,n . better chance to cover this great distance, viz., some 713 miles airline, which as yet has not been done from tho south to the north, and quite a number of good tried birds have gone under in tho attempt.
