Messrs John Strang and Bland Rayner, who acted as judges on the n day* of the Wanganui Show, returned to Masterton yesterday. Mr C. Cvacroft Wilson, representing Messrs Wright, Stevenson and Co.. Ltd., arrived in Masterton yesterday. A Wellington tcligram stated that Mr Rtoyd Garlick, of Wellington, has been appointed Government Director of Physical Education in New Zealand. Mr W. H. Buick, of Masterton, took several prizes for Ronmey Marsh ■sheep at the Wanganui Show. Mr W. Perry, however, was first in every class in which he had an entry. A London cable states that it is officially announced that Sir C. A. Spring Rice, Ambassador to Sweden, will succeed tho Right Hon. James Bryce as British Ambassador in the United States. The statement that Mr P. C. Freeth of Wellington, contemplated taking over the managership of the Taihape Daily Times proves to be, without foundation. Mr Freeth has not- present intention of leaving Wellington. An Invercargill telegram states that the Hon. J. Allen visited Invercargill yesterday and received deputations regarding several local matters. He left for the north by the afternoon's express. Mr George Elliott, a well-known settlor of ißtongkokako, near Eketa"huna, fell dead at the local dairy factory on Wednesday morning. He was thirty-five years of age, and single. He had previously complained of a pain in tho region of the "heart. Mr Evelyn French, the organiser of of the Overseas Club, has arrived- at Eremantle, en route- to New Zealand. He is expected to be in Masterton on December 20th. He will "be accompanied on his tour through New Zealand by Captain Waters, the Dominion organiser. An Invercargill message states that "His Excellency the Governor arrived there yesterday afternoon, and was received by the Mayor and representative citizens. In the evening he was presented with farewell addresses "by the Mayor and councillors. Later he opened a branch of the Overseas Club.

The death took place at Wellington yesterday morning of Mr William Thomson, an old identity of tlio city, at the age of 81 years. Deceased was for a number of years oh the Otago goldfields, but subsequently joined Sparrow's foundry in- Bunedin,. and later occupied prominent positions in various foundries in Wellington. The Hons W. H, Herrios, F. M. B. Fisher, and' Dr. Pomare will leave for Auckland on Monday next. The Hon. R. TH. Rhodes will probably leave for the North to-day. The Hon. J. Allen will return from Tnvercargill on Sunday, and probably leave for Auckland on Monday. The Hon. W. Fraser will leave for the South to-day, to attend tlio Dunstan celebrations. A Wellington telegram states that Sir Joseph Ward and Miss Ward left Wellington for the south by the Ulimaroa last night. They leave the Bluff next Monday for Australia, en route for England. Sir Joseph Ward will return to New Zealand by next May. Some hundreds of people assembled on. the wharf to see the party off. Many beautiful bouquets were presented to Lady Ward and Sir Joseph Ward was very heartily cheered. Mr D. K. Logan, of Masterton, states that it is probable that the body of his late father will he brought to New Zealand for interment. He has not yet been advised as to the cause of his father's death. When the late Mr Logan left New Zealand lie was apparently in the best of healthy and spirits, and Mr D. K. Logan has iust received a letter, dated last month, in which Miss Logan stated that her father was never in better health.
