INTERESTING FUNCTION

AT DISTRICT HIGH SGHOOL. A pleasant and interesting function eventuated at tho Masterton District High .School yesterday afternoon, when the team which won the Thompson-Payne Shield at the recent Physical Culture at Masterton was presented with the shield. Mr G. E. Sykes, M.P., presented' th.s trophy, and remarked that it w; rather notable that the youngest team had been .successful, and paid a tribute to tho value of deep breathing exeteiscs, as this of juveniles practicjlly owed their .success to the lesson;s received in 11: is department from the instructor. Mr S.vkes said that the Minister of Education had already stated his intention to have a course cf physical training carried out in the primary school, nnd for this purpose instrnc- . tors were to be appointed. Mr Sykes nls ' referred eulogistic-ally to the excellent work done by Mr Jarrett in this connection, and gave a resume of the ground covered during the past few years, until now physical culture and deep breathing were looked upon as almost essential to good health. After tho presentation of tho Thompson-Payne Shield Mr A, W. Hogg, number of the Wellington Eclti" cation Board, presented the Wairarapa Rugby Union Challenge Shield to the High School team, winners for the 1912 season. Mr Hogg made a strong appeal to the hoys to always "play the game," which remarks were greeted by ringing cheers. Mr R. 0. Jarrett also made a brief speech. Mr W. H. Jackson, in a few appropriate words, thanked those had taken such a. lively interest in the affairs of tho school.
