DISTRICT NEWS

(From our C'ornv-pavlont.) J BID 10 FORD. Owing to the very unsettled .state of tho weather in this district has been greatly hampered. Several settlers have now decided to put shearing of? until the -weathei , takes up. This means that tho majority of the farms will not finish shearing before Christmas uml possibly liter. A season such as tho present one is bad for tho settler and shearer alike. The latter will be deprived of work, and will in consequence earn a smaller chequo than usual, as tho settler cannot put shearing off beyond a certain time 011 account, of the hutiwai, which will have to be considered in the course of a few weeks. Ihis means that tho sheep will have to be shorn by the station hands or any j men that, arc available. Of course it is just possible that tho weather may improve before tho season ivery far advanced, which would make the outlook not quite go .serious. Several clips in this district have already boon sold. The prices are most satisfactory, as much as 10.U1 being realised, which is considered a splendid figure for this part of thecountry. Stock buvers have been operating freely throughout the district, ami forward delivery deals have been largely effected. Fat -wether* have sold at 18s, and lambs at lis, which represents almost record prices for the district. With stock fetching such high prices, this district is ha-ving altogether J a more prosperous time than has I been experienced for many years. ' Station holders have largely to thank the Waingawa Meat Company for the keen competition for .stock, which has brought this satisfactory state of affairs about. There is very keen inquiry lor '2tooth wethers off the shears, for sale b.v forward delivery, several lots being sold at from 13s (xl'Mip to 1 Is, for delivery in January. Mr E. Collier, who has been conducting wool classes at Bideford during tho past winter, has visited several of the sheds during shearing, and gave practical instruction in each, t with the result that the clips for this J district should this year show improvement in the "get-up." The roads in the district are in a very bad state, and it would be advisable for the Comity Council to- put on more men before the carting of the' 1 wool commences. At present the roods are certainly in n very disgraceful state, and the number of men working on them is quite inadequate.
