A MAIZE CROP

Some months ago tho Australian journal Life gave some particulars of a. wonderful crop of maize raised by a boy named Jerry of South Carolina, United States of America. The crop was stated to he 228 bushels from an acre, and the writer of the article was promptly accused by a New Zealand correspondent of "eclipsing Ananias." "The Maoris in this Dominion," he added, "have never yet had eighty bushels per acre, and have been growing maize in good soil and a splendid climate for over 100 yeirs." The. editor of Life at once wrote to the American Department of Agriculture for confirmation of the statements as to "Jerry Moore's corn crop," and has now received a reply asserting tho absolute truth of what was said. Seven other boys, it is stated, raised more than 200 bushels pe racre, one of them, from Mississippi,' gotting near. I.;' 1 .;' as much as Jorry Moore, and » great many produced more than lo() bushels. Apparently as regards maize growing the Maoris round Opotiki and elsewhere in the North Island havo •/< good deal yet to learn.
