THE RAILOPHONE
Remarkable demonstrations of tho Von Kramer wireless inductive system as applied to double automatic train signalling were- given at Strat-ford-on-Avon on June 28. Tho demonstrations included railographing a mossago from a station to a train, warning a movable train by audiblo signal, signalling to a station from a moving train, stopping a train in motion from a station, automatically stopping a ti'.iin in motion, preventing a train from entering a section, fogsigalling, and the reproduction of conditions which have led to serious railway accidents. Tho latter experiment was especially interesting. A slow train entered tho section under normal conditions, and proceeded slowly in the section. A fast train then entered the same sec- > tion against the danger signal, and by means of tho wireless apparatus both trains we.ro automatically stopped, thus proving that a collision with this precaution was impossible. A second experiment was tried with a train travelling from Ettington towards, Str-itford on the down line. "While in the middle of the section a second train entered the same section. also on the down line, from tho Stratford end. Both were automatically pulled up, and a collision which in other circumstances would have occurred was prevented by means of this apparatus. Tn another experiment a visitor was called upon to press a button on tho platform, and thereby pull up by mechanical mo:n s the train steaming ■full speed tivo miles away. In demonstrating the use of the railophono in the case of distress signalling a train was taken some two Hundred yards out of the station, and a powerful hooter way caused to sound «n it by closing the switch in the sig- } wal cabin. !,, „ similar way alarm signals were sent fro,,, the train, u hen it was actually moving, to the station and v.ce versa, this being done, with the object of lowing that every precaution could be taken forestall an accent if i„ actual practice it was -found that a train was running into , Hanger or a. driver of ;1 . tram wished to warn a ma n in tho signal-box '
