Mr G. G. Aitken, who ha:- been accountant in tho Masterton branch of the Union. Bank of Auuralasia for a number of years, has tendered his resignation from the Bank, in order to enter into a commercial busiuonn in Christchurch with his brother. .Mr Aitken leaves for the south a! - , the end of November, and will be gren i;ly missed in sporting and social circles. He has been one of the most prominent members of the local golf and lawn tennis clubs, and l holds quite a Domion reputation as a tennis player.
A private cable was received "n Wellington on Wednesday afternoon. t announcing the death of Captain Honry Rose, formerly well-known in Wellington. Captain born in Central America in 1833,- went to •sea at the,age of 14, became third officer at 18, and at 24 years ' aga'P 1 obtained a captain's certificate. For fifteen years (between 1860 and 1875) he traded between London and Canterbury. Until 1879 ho was an officer of the old White Star Lino, and eventually became captain of the first boat of the New Zealand Shipping Company, the Rakaia, In 1885 ho was appointed marine superintendent . of the company's fleet for the Dominion', and a year later he.accepted the position-of local manager of the New. Zealand' Shipping Company at Wellington. He retired from the Com- r pany's service sixteen years ago, arid since, then lived in retirement in. London.
Mrs I. M. Hill, a very old colonist, formerly well known in the Hutt and Wairarapa "districts, passed .away at her home in Waimea Street, Nelson,, on Monday night. Mrs Hill, who had reached the age of 63 years,; was pre- - deceased by her husband bv some 27" " years. She arrived in Welitngtoft with her parents in 1840. The survive ■/ -iug members of Mrs Hill's family are: MrS. E.Hill, of the Postal Department at Christchurch; Mrs D. Buick, Palmerston ; Mrs S. i«. MacMahon, Nelson'} Mrs A. Bosiworth, '%'Christelrarch; Mrs G. Sere, Dunedin; Mrs CV Emmerson, Nelson; Mr-fc. "J; Hill, manager of the South Taranaki Steamship Company at Wellington; and Mr I. M. Hill, Timaru. The late Mrs Hill leaves 27 grandchiklrcwt, and eight great-grandchildren.
