EDWARD GIBBON WAKEFIELD.

If there is one man whose name should be perpetuated and revered by the people of New Zealand for his sterling qualities a.s a coloniser, that one is Edward Gibbon Wakefield. Only the 9ldest settlers appreciate to their fullness the great efforts of that brilliant pioneer to settle the lands of this Dominion on a satisfactory hasis. It is to be hoped that the Government of New Zealand will see to it that the records of this colonist are> preserved, and that a fitting monument is erected to his memory. The tribute is one which should he Qf a national character, and for this reason the Government should take the initiative and bear the cost.
