POST OFFICE REFORM.
While objections were raised to tho Postal Department of Now Zealand being removed from the immediate control of the Postmaster-General, and brought under a Hoard of Commissioners, it is interesting; to note that a proposal made in this direction by tho late Hon W. H. Smith to Sir Stafford Northeote in l< y 77, is now being revived in the Old Country. Tho late Mr Smith suggested tint the Board of Directors of tho Post Office should consist of a Chairman at a salary of £3500, and two sub-directors each receiving £2OOO ayenr. with, say, fivo business men who shall receive j substantial directors' fees and be summoned once a fortnight. The Chairman was -to liave tho same freed; 1 of access to the Prime Minister as any Minister of tho Crown.
