PARLIAMENT
(By Telegraph—Press Annexation.) .WELLINGTON, Last Night. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. DEFENCE BILL. In tho Legislative Council this afternoon, the Hon H. D. Bell moved the second reading of the Defence Bill, which had been passed by the House. He said an effort luul been made to meet the difficulties of the religious objector as far as possible, and lie hoped members would recognise that these objectors could be accommodated with ambulanco duty. After a brief discussion, the second reading of the Bill was carried on the yoices. OTHER BILLS. The Widows' Pensions Bill and Tnieri Land Drainago Bill were read a second time, and -the Council rose-. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY. In the House of Representatives, tho Premier moved to set up a Select Committee to consider a petition of P. W. Haybittle and others, regarding tho iron and steel industry in the Dominion. the Committee to consist of Messrs Oaigie, Fra.ser. Lee, Malcolm, Nosworthy, McKenzic. Sidev, Ve.itch, G. M. Thompson, Wilkinson, Davey and the mover, and to have power to call.for persons and papers, the Committee. to report to the House within seven days. The Premier the Government had no intent.-'n- of introducing legislation on the matter this ■session, but he understood that some important evidence was available, and would be put before the Committee. The motion was carried.
