BRITAIN AND CRETE
GERMAN PAPER'S IDEA. (Received October 19, 8 a.m.) BERLIN, October 18. The newspaper Vossiche Zeitung declares that the presence of a 'British fleet in Suda, Bay signifies that though Crete may now be regarded as belonging to Greece, it is Britain's distinct interest to see that Suda Bay falls into no other hands than those of Britain. « (Suda Bay is in the north of the Island of Crete. It has the best anchorage in the island.) PARIS, October 18. The Vienna correspondent of the newspaper Le Temps forwards an unverified rumour that the British Ambassador t'here (Sir F. L. Oartwright) is reported to have recently informed an Austrian official that "we want Crete." 1 (Received Last Night, 0.0 o'clock.) LONDON,' October 19. Official circles absolutely deny the remark attributed to Sir F. L. Cart-wi-iglit. They state, that, from Britain's standpoint, any change in the status of Crete would be a matter for the synstoiiis to the Berlin Treaty. .
