FREE SCHOOL BOOKS.
I The Potone District High School Com- [ mittee has protested against the pro- ' posal of the Government to withdraw the grant for free school books. In that protest we heartily coneur. No b'ody better than those -who have children attending the schools knows the tax that is involved in providing books and stationery. If the system of education is to be free, in other than name, the parent should be relieved of all direct responsibility for the provision of books. Unhappily, most of our Education Boards are composed of men who have no children attending the. schools, and these have ropresanted to ihe Oove;vnnoi:t that free books are a luxury. We j hope that the Minister will reconsider his decision in this matter. It is the man with a. large family who feels the school book tax, a nd if we are going to encourage, the propagation of such families, we should make the burden of taxation as light as possible.
