REPORT BY THE COMMITTEE. (Bi> Tfileamph — Vrm Association.) , : WELLINGTON. Last Night, The Committee's report on the Tanpo Totara Timbni- Company's petition was presented to the House,, this afternoon. The findings of ; Jthp Committee were as follows: —(a) The Committee does not recommend the Government to purchase the railway in the manner and on the terms sugr gestod by the company ; (b) it does not recommend the Government to grant the prayer of the petitioners to lie allowed to purchase 200,000 acres of native land ; (c) it is of opinion that it is- desirable that .inducements, be offered to settlers to occupy the land in the vicinity of the tramline and of Lake Tanpo, and to this end facilities for the economical transit of manures and produce are necessary; (d) the Committee recommends that an Order-. in-Comicil be granted to the company to extend their line to Tanpo; that •the Government guarantee the cost not exceeding IMO.OOO. on adequate security, and on conditions securrng (1) that the construction of the permanent way >s carried ovt to the i satisfaction of the Government; (2) that uniform freight and passenger rates over the completed system from Putaruru to Taiipo are controlled in the public interest; and (3) that the Government have the right, at any time to purchase the line and plant in working order at a price not to exceed the actual cost of construction, such price to include goodwill.
