Expert helpers at Mount Lyell are being largely augmented, and no effort is being spared to effect a speedy relen.se of the entombed miners. f The smoke and gases from the workings are still very troublesome. I It is hoped to get the damaged cage working in time to bring those j in the 1000 ft level to the surface tonight. There are no tidings of the balance of the men in the other levels. Replying to adverse criticism to the effect that the company was not provided . with a second "get out," the secretary of the Mt Lyell Company declared that there were two outlets to the main shaft, and an engine winze Tb n Jatier, was fully, equip-, ped. The shaft was used in the early days. The delay in using it was,due. 'to the fact that ten feet had to be sunk and other portions straightened up. ' . - RESCUERS AT WORK. SHAFT CAGE JAMMED. (Received T/lasMornmg,l2.2o o'clock.) HOB ART, October 15; Everything is being done 'to I'eaeh the entombed men. The cage is still jammed between the 500 feet and 600 feet levels, and cannot be lowered. Meantime food and blankets and other necessaries have been sent down to keep in the men good spirits. One of the rescuers who reached the 700 ft levels states that he found the body of an engine-driver, named Loashling, beside his engine. SYMPATHY FROM NEW ZEAI LAND. WELLINGTON, Last Night, The Hon W. F. Massey sent the following cable re the Mount Lyell disaster: "The Premier, Hobart, Tasmania.—Please accept the sympathy of the Government and people f New Zealand, and also my personal sympathy, with the sufferers in the terrible calamity which has overtaken them by the disastrous fi.ro in the North Mount Lyell mine.—W. F. Massey." The following reply ; »a8 I received : "Many thinks for your kind ; telegram of sympathy in. connection with the Mt Lyell disaster.—Solomon, Premier."
