J WORK OF RK>(;rF. RETARDED. I FIVE MEN DIE FROM SUFFOCATION. (Received Last Night. 51.30 o'clock.) HOBART, October 14. News from Mount Lyell is coming through very alowly. Tho telegraph office is inundated with private nfessages from relatives, which are given preference. HEARTRENDING SCENES. Many pathetic scenes have been witnessed here and in other townships. Crowds assemble at the newspaper \and telegraph offices. The scenes at the mine head are heartrending. Hundreds of weeping women and men are arjxiously watching the rescue operations. RESCUE WORK RETARDED. Everything that is possible is being done to reach the entombed men. The efforts of the rescuers were feverishly pushed forward throughout last night, but were to-day retarded by smoke and poisonous fumes rising from tho shaft, and permeating the workings. Great care was necessary, and there were many checks in the work during the forenoon. Relays of rescuers managed to cut a hoi© through the engine winze and reach the seven hundred feet level. Subsequently an official notice was posted that five bodies had been found. All had died from suffocation.
