A miner dressed in ;i diver's suit penetrated to the 700 ft level but foufeid no sign of any of the men. The fire had then almost burnt out. The fc-haft has not been damaged. I Rescue operations are being feverI ishly pushed on. Four men were rescued from the 500 feet yesterday. The number still missing is eighty-nine. The'rescuers are wof-king against great orlds. The heat is intense and 'the smoke and fumes- from the ores poisonous. Two men who penetrated

The chairman of the" Lyell Company states that the latest information points to the fact that the entombed men are a way in the main shaft, probably sheltering in the levels, which are wide arid high. There is plenty of shelter in the stopes and winzes. It is believed there are supplies of good ai}- in the lower levels, •and compressed ait: is being pumped in. . . The Chief Inspector's of' Mines in New South Wales and Victoria happened to be visiting Lvell to report on the i»ine connection trouble between the management and the men, and rendered valuable assistance in the rescue work. . v .' Mr Sawyer, the New* South Wales Inspiector, headed and led gangs which repeatedly descended till he was overcome. The four men rescued were at the 4000 ft level. Thov did not suffer severely.
