THE WAIHI STRIKE

A RUSE THAT FAILED, rATRETIC APPEAL BY A CHILD,. (By Teleqravh—Fress Association.} WAIHI, Last Night. Strike matters here to-day were A a much milder character. The Waihi Company have intimated that workers will be conveyed to and from thoir work by the company. Late last night a gang of striker* went to a prominent mining contractor's residence. One man went to tlit* house and knocked at the door, whilothe others stood back. The contractor, who answered the door in persony noticed that the man wore a ribbon of red, white and blue, evidently to disarm any suspicion. The man said, "Constable Skinner is outside, and wants to speak to you." Th» contraotor replied, "If the constabl» wants to see me, let him come in." - The man then asked if he could tatra any message to the constable. The reply was, "Tell him I'm all right; good night." He then closed ~ th« door. The intention of the plotter* can only be imagined. A....path otic appeal was made by » girl of very tender years to her mother yesterday afternoon. The lattev was wheeling a perambulator in th« wake of the crowd following sorao workers.' She was hurrying to get closer to the frontj and seeing her tiny offspring lagging behind, she urged the child to hasten. "Hurry up? Hurry up!" she cried to the child, a - she pushed the pram along. 'I ho child, in plaintive tones, replied, "Oh, mother, do not go looking for anv more 'scabs'; I'm so tired!" Instructions have been issued hr the strike committee to suppress displays of the red flag and red ribbon. It is surmised that the instructions* are the result of the display of red, white and blue which has been nr> prevalent in town lately, nnd which in the opinion of the committee fronts the* wnv iv stead of nn incTr-;-tnnl dispute is being waged.
