LOANS TO LOCAL BODIES.
List week the Minister of Finance, in a statement to the House, showed that certain local bodies had received large sums of money from the State Guaranteed Advances Office during the last year or two, notwithstanding that the amount to be advanced hid been restricted to £SOOO. This statement has been interpreted as a charge of corruption against previous Governments, and Mr Wilford is asking for a Commission of Enquiry to be set up. The country is not in such a flourishing condition that it can afford to throw away thousands of pounds on a Commission. If Mr Wilford and his friends feci sore, let them ask for a report from a Select Committee of the House. This would cost •nothing, and. it would furnish all the information that is required.
