A NEW AWARD. (By Telegrapfir-Press Association.) w ELLINGTON, Last Night. A new award lias been secured by the Wellington General Labourers' Union. For the'benefit of. sonio of the country districts it partly supersedes the awa-d which formerly applied to all ih<: area lying* outside the twenty-mile radius from Wellington city, and will'(be limited in its operation for the present, to areas lying within a ten-mile radius from the Post Offices at Wanganui, Hastings and Napier. A memo attached to the award shows that its operations have been limited in this way. on the application of the .'Union-and also that the old award will remain in force elsewhere in the district until superseded. Amongst the improvements secured by the new award are the shortening of the week's work from fortyeight hours to forty-six, and a definite fixing of the day's work. Previously the .employers could fix ihe hours as they pleased to suit, their particular business, but now the day':-, work must be between 7 a.m. and r>.3o p.m." The minimum wage has been raised to Is ljd per hour, which means an. increase of 6s per week. Wages have been fixed for the different classes of work as follows:—Is Lid per hour for labourers employed in connection with the erection, alteration or demolition of any building, or in excavating or preparing ground for this purpose; Ls 3d per hour for labourers employed in the construction of sea fields; 10s per shift for tunnelmen and timbermen, and ih per shift for all other underground workers; Is 3d per hour for quarry workers getting out stone roughly squared to measurement; ls Hd per hour for powdermen, hammer and drillmeti and jumpermen; Is 1-Jd per hour for all other quarry workers; Is lsd pei hour for general labouring Work. The preference clause has been altered by adding a stipulation that an employer shall dismiss a non-un-ionist within six days after his engagement, if the Union can produce a unionist equally qualified to perform his worte, ffi.
