CELEBRATION OF TENTH ANNI- - VERSARY. No celebration occurred on August 4 for the anniversary o fthe election of Pius X. as Pope, as the function 'was reserved for August 9, which' was the tenth anniversary of his coronation. The event had. .special importance this year, because"?!; completes the ninth year of the reign of Pius X., thus destroying the legend that ho would not surpass that limit as Pontift'.
Tlie celebration took place in the Sistine Chapel in the presence of the Sacred College, the Patriarchs, Archbishops, Bishops, and the whole ecclesiastic and lay ' Papal Court. The Pope, who wore the triple crown and the Papal mantle, entered the chapel on foot, preceded and followed by the Noble and the Swiss Guards. The Diplomatic Bodv, the Roman aristocracy, and tho Knights of the Order of Malta assisted from special tribunes. In another tribune were the sisters and niece of the Pope, who had returned purposely to Rome from Monteciitini. where they have been, taking the baths. The Mass was celebrated bv the Secretary of State. (Cardinal Merrv del Val), as the first Cardinal created by the present Pope, and the music was provided by the Papal choir directed by Maestro Lorenzo Perosi. The /ope. looked extremelv well, doubtless owing to Ue exceptionally cool summer in Rome tl Hi'r?T , olines.s gave 2000 *o distributed to the poor through free I food kitchens.
