WAKE UP, NEW ZEALAND!
i. . >— Writing from Sydney under date August 8, a former resident of Auckland (says the New Zealand Herald) referred to the number of immigrants arriving in Australia, and incidentally expressed the opinion that it was time New Zealand woke up to the necessity for inaugurating a vigorous immigration policy. "Yesterday," he writes, "2381 immigrants arrivedi by three vessels, and next month 1500 more are to arrive, all for New South Wales. "When," he asks, "is New Zealand going to follow this country's example, and go in for a vigorous immigration policy?" In the concluding portion of his letter he states that all the new arrivals would got work quickly, although the bricklayers' unions were growling at there being too many "brickies" in the country. As against that, however, the builders say that building work is, being ; hung up for-tho want of bricklayers and bricks.
